The Crouching Lion Hike: Oahu, HI

The view of Kahana Bay at top of the crouching lion hike is the closest you will ever get to being on set of any Jurassic Park movie unless you’re ever part of the cast. I find myself hiking to the top of the lion every time I return to the magical island of Oahu strictly because of how awesome the view is.

(Here is Jim modelling some dark clouds and waves, that little “bump” to the left of the mountain range is the crouching lion )

The hike itself isn’t very long, at most, 30 minutes of climbing through dense forest and very dry and steep soil with a challenging last part hiking on very sharp lava rock as you approach the “lion”. With humidity levels rising throughout the day, I highly recommend bringing a water bottle.

Located in Kaaawa the hike is about a 15 min drive past Turtle Bay Resortif you’re coming from the North. There is no parking anywhere close to the trail head so either getting dropped off or using your best judgement and parking at your own risk near Kahana State Park is your best bet. Do not park on Trout Farm Rd; you will get towed.

The trail head is in between the “Do not pass” sign and the telephone pole right after it to the right of the road of you are coming from the North Shore.

(That big opening next to the telephone pole is the trail head)

Once you find the trail head you will notice that nothing is marked as of where to go, find the clearing and keep heading up. The trail is steep and you will gain elevation fast enough to be able get a peek at what the view at top will be like.

The breeze and the view of the windward side of Oahu is so rewarding once you reach the top.

P.S Don’t forget to stop by the swings next to the parking lot at Kahana State Park, they are awesome
